Nightly vs 24-hour stays: how to price them for your hotel

15 October 20264 min read

How nightly and 24-hour stays work, how to price them and how late checkout is charged, with worked example times.

Hotel Operations

Most small hotels in India sell rooms by the night: check in at noon, check out at 11 AM. It is simple and every guest understands it. But for guests who arrive at odd hours, a 24-hour stay can be fairer. This guide compares the two and works through how late checkout is charged, using example times.

How a nightly stay works

A nightly stay has fixed times. Whether the guest arrives at 1 PM or 3 AM, checkout is at the same hour, usually 11 AM or 12 noon. Early check-in is often charged extra or not allowed.

Good for: guests arriving in the afternoon or evening, families, leisure trips, and OTA bookings. Weak spot: a guest who arrives in the early hours pays for a full night and gets a few hours.

How a 24-hour stay works

A 24-hour stay starts when the guest checks in and ends exactly 24 hours later. Check in at 5 AM, check out at 5 AM the next day. Guests can book more than one unit: two units is 48 hours, three is 72.

Good for: guests arriving late at night or early morning, such as travellers near stations and airports. Weak spot: rooms free up at different times, so housekeeping needs a plan.

A 24-hour stay is not hourly booking. Hourly booking is a separate BitLegacy feature. A 24-hour stay is a full 24 hours from check-in.

Pricing: start from your night rate

The simplest approach is to price one 24-hour unit close to your normal night rate. The guest gets a full 24 hours instead of a shortened night, and you avoid the early check-in argument.

Things to weigh when you set the rate:

  • Room availability. A 24-hour guest who arrives in the evening holds the room past your usual checkout time. That can block a room you might have sold to a morning arrival.
  • Cleaning at odd hours. Rooms are turned around through the day and night. BitLegacy keeps a cleaning buffer of 45 minutes by default before the room is offered again.
  • Who books. If most 24-hour guests arrive between midnight and 6 AM, those are hours your rooms would often sit empty anyway.

Look at your own bookings and decide. There is no single right number for every hotel.

How late checkout is charged

BitLegacy uses this rule for late checkout on 24-hour stays by default, and owners can adjust it in Settings:

How late Charge
Up to 2 hours Free
More than 2 hours, up to 6 hours Half price
More than 6 hours Another 24-hour unit

Worked examples (example times)

Example 1: a little late. Check in Monday 4:00 AM. Due out Tuesday 4:00 AM. The guest leaves at 5:30 AM, 1.5 hours late. That is within 2 hours, so there is no extra charge.

Example 2: a few hours late. Check in Monday 11:00 PM. Due out Tuesday 11:00 PM. The guest leaves Wednesday at 2:00 AM, 3 hours late. That is between 2 and 6 hours, so they pay half price.

Example 3: well past checkout. Check in Monday 6:00 AM. Due out Tuesday 6:00 AM. The guest leaves at 1:00 PM, 7 hours late. That is over 6 hours, so it counts as another 24-hour unit. Their stay is now two units, ending Wednesday 6:00 AM.

Example 4: a multi-unit stay. Check in Friday 2:30 AM, booked for 3 units. Due out Monday 2:30 AM. The guest leaves at 4:00 AM, 1.5 hours late. No extra charge.

Because the invoice and WhatsApp messages show exact times, the guest can see their due time from the start. If a guest goes past it, staff see an overdue alert and can press Extend to add time.

Compare the same guest both ways (example times)

A guest arrives at 3:00 AM and needs to leave around 1:00 AM the next night.

  • Nightly: they check in at 3:00 AM and must leave at 11:00 AM. To stay until the next night they need a second night.
  • 24-hour: they check in at 3:00 AM and are due out at 3:00 AM the next day. Leaving at 1:00 AM is before checkout, so one unit covers it.

For this guest, the 24-hour stay is clearer and fairer.

Can you offer both?

Yes. You can keep nightly stays for OTA guests and offer 24-hour stays to direct guests. OTAs such as MakeMyTrip see 24-hour bookings as normal nights, so true 24-hour stays are booked on your own website (Default and Luxury templates on BitLegacy) or at the front desk.

Setting it up in BitLegacy

24-hour stays are included free on all Hotel and Resort plans. They are off by default; switch them on in Settings and set the longest stay guests can book online, from 1 to 30 units. Homestays and farmhouses can have it turned on on request. See how 24-hour check-in works in BitLegacy.
