OTA commission vs direct bookings for Indian hotels

BitLegacy helps independent hotels keep OTAs for discovery while growing commission-free direct stays on a guest website with UPI/Razorpay where entitled. OTAs are not “always more expensive” — they buy reach. Direct recovers margin when guests already know you and can pay on your site. BitLegacy takes no OTA-style cut of those direct stays; gateway MDR still applies. Guest website tools ship with Starter from ₹299/month (2 rooms). Channel Manager is not in ₹299. We do not invent “save 15–20%” or claim “#1 cheapest.” Use the labeled EXAMPLE below — then your invoices. BitLegacy Hotels is hotel management software (hotel PMS) by BitLegacy Solutions LLP (India) for independent hotels and hospitality businesses.

Labeled EXAMPLE only. Assumptions set by the author for illustration: ADR ₹3,000, 20% commission (author mid-band — not your live OTA invoice), 8,000 room nights / year. Re-run with your ADR, occupancy, and contracts. We do not claim “save 15–20%” as a product promise. A common industry band quoted in education content is ~15–25% — always check your OTA agreement.

When OTAs help — and when direct recovers margin

Keep calendars honest. Shift the mix; do not quit OTAs overnight.

1. When OTAs help fill the house

New markets, last-minute fill, and guests who only trust a marketplace still convert on MakeMyTrip / Booking.com and peers. Quitting OTAs overnight usually costs occupancy. Discovery and desk ops are different jobs.

2. When direct + UPI recovers margin

Repeat guests, Maps/Instagram enquiries, and WhatsApp replies that already know your brand. Send them to your BitLegacy booking website — commission-free on those stays — with Razorpay UPI/cards where entitled. Confirm entitlement on /pricing. Guide: /hotel-booking-engine-upi-razorpay-india · product site: /website.

3. Labeled EXAMPLE (not your invoice)

Author-set assumptions for illustration: ADR ₹3,000; commission 20% (author mid-band — check your contract; education content often cites ~15–25% as a common band estimate); 8,000 nights/year. Commission per OTA night ≈ ₹600. Moving mix from 80% → 40% OTA in this EXAMPLE keeps on the order of ₹19,20,000/year in the business — before your own website, ads, and MDR costs. Re-run with your numbers. We do not claim “save 15–20%.”

4. BitLegacy path (invent-nothing)

Guest website + booking tools on paid lodging / Starter from ₹299/month (2 rooms). UPI/Razorpay guest checkout where entitled (Marketplace / Pro — not assumed on Free hotel). MDR is a gateway fee — not a BitLegacy cut of the room. Channel Manager ₹1,000/month on Starter/Growth (included on Pro/Pro+) so growing direct does not create double bookings. 60-day trial on eligible plans.

5. Sane strategy

Keep OTAs for reach. Make direct easy (site + live rates + UPI). Win repeats (reviews, WhatsApp thank-you — Manual Notify, not auto-booking). Keep inventory honest with Channel Manager when OTAs stay live. Education secondary: /blog/ota-commission-vs-direct-bookings-india.

What we claim — and what we do not

  • BitLegacy takes no OTA-style cut of commission-free direct stays on your guest site
  • Gateway MDR still applies — not zero MDR forever
  • Guest website on Starter from ₹299/mo (2 rooms) · CM not in ₹299
  • EXAMPLE maths only — author-set ADR / % / nights; check your OTA contracts
  • Not “save 15–20%” as a product promise · not “#1 cheapest”
  • Not quit-OTAs-overnight advice · not WhatsApp Pay-inside-chat

Frequently asked questions

Are OTAs always more expensive than direct?

It depends. OTAs often take a platform commission (common education band ~15–25% — estimate; check your live contract). Direct on BitLegacy has no OTA-style cut of the room, but you still pay SaaS, marketing time, and gateway MDR on UPI/cards. Sometimes OTA reach fills empty nights that direct would not. Use labeled EXAMPLE maths on /ota-commission-vs-direct-bookings-india, then your invoices. Product site: /website · UPI: /hotel-booking-engine-upi-razorpay-india · money: /pricing · /hotel-pms-from-299. We do not claim “save 15–20%.”

Should independent hotels stop using OTAs?

Usually no. Keep OTAs for discovery; grow direct for repeats and brand-aware guests. Unsynced calendars hurt more than an honest OTA mix.

Does BitLegacy take a cut of direct bookings?

No OTA-style commission on BitLegacy direct stays. Guest website checkout MDR (Razorpay) is a payment-gateway fee — not a BitLegacy cut of the room.

Is Channel Manager required to grow direct?

Only if you still sell on OTAs and need one inventory. CM is ₹1,000/month on Starter/Growth — not in ₹299. See /channel-manager.
