UPI & Razorpay on Your Hotel Website: Why Indian Guests Abandon Card-Only Checkout

14 September 20267 min read

Card-only Western booking engines fail Indian guests. UPI at checkout is the conversion feature — here is how BitLegacy + Razorpay fit, without promising WhatsApp Pay-inside-chat or zero MDR.

Revenue & Growth

Indian guests do not “prefer cards.” They open PhonePe, GPay, or Paytm for everything from chai to flights. A hotel booking website that only shows card forms — or worse, pay at hotel only — asks them to behave like a tourist from 2012.

This guide is for owners comparing OTA commission vs direct who already know direct is cheaper — but wonder why guests still bounce at checkout.

The abandonment pattern

Typical funnel:

  1. Guest finds you on Maps, Instagram, or WhatsApp
  2. You send your booking site link
  3. Checkout asks for an international card or “pay later at hotel”
  4. Guest closes the tab and books MakeMyTrip instead

The product gap is not “more photos.” It is UPI-first checkout on a site you control.

AxisRooms, Exceed, Stayvora, and ScaleBit all sell this angle for a reason. Exceed’s own FAQ language is blunt: UPI is the killer feature for India.

What “UPI on your website” actually means

Piece Job
Booking website Live rooms + rates guests trust
Payment gateway (e.g. Razorpay) UPI / cards / net banking at checkout
PMS Reservation + folio after pay
WhatsApp Confirm and answer — not the payment rail (unless you have a live Pay-in-chat product)

Do not confuse BitLegacy SaaS subscription billing (also often via Razorpay) with guest checkout on your hotel site. Guests pay you; you pay BitLegacy separately.

BitLegacy + Razorpay (honest)

On BitLegacy’s guest website, entitled properties can take advances through Razorpay — UPI, cards, and net banking.

Entitlement: Paid Marketplace path or Pro-included. Confirm on Pricing / Marketplace. Do not assume every Free hotel plan includes guest Razorpay checkout.

Commission-free stays: BitLegacy does not take an OTA-style cut on those direct room nights. Gateway MDR still applies.

Advances: Follow your property’s pay-window / deposit settings — not a promise of instant T+0 settlement.

MDR vs OTA commission (quick maths)

Assume ADR ₹3,000 and OTA commission 20% → ₹600 gone per OTA night.

A Razorpay UPI MDR of a few percent is still usually far smaller than that OTA line — but it is not “free.” Budget both:

Trust at checkout

Guests pay more readily when the URL looks like a hotel:

Multiproperty tip

Running several villas under a free Multiproperty hub? You can configure a shared Razorpay pool. That is not automatic bank split to every manager — optional settlements ledger is separate. See portfolio hub.

What not to invent

  • WhatsApp Pay-inside-chat as BitLegacy’s checkout
  • PhonePe / PayU exclusive unless connected for your property
  • “Zero payment fees forever”
  • GST e-invoice IRN push just because a payment succeeded

Next steps

  1. Publish your booking website
  2. Confirm Razorpay entitlement on Pricing / Marketplace
  3. Test a real UPI advance on staging or a low amount
  4. Put the book link in WhatsApp replies
